Low-carbon hydrogen is an essential element in the transition to net-zero emissions by 2050. Hydrogen production from biomass a promising bio-energy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) scheme that could produce low-carbon generate dioxide removal (CDR) envisioned be required offset hard-to-abate emissions. Here, we design BECCS supply chain for quantify, at high spatial resolution, technical potential CDR Europe. We consider sustainable feedstocks have minimal impacts on food security biodiversity, namely agricultural residues waste. find this can up 12.5 Mtons of H2 per year (currently ∼10 are used Europe) remove 133 CO2 atmosphere (or 3% European total greenhouse gas emissions). then perform geospatial analysis quantify transportation distances between where located users, 20% within 25 km hard-to-electrify industries. conclude chains represent overlooked near-term opportunity hydrogen.
